it was disclosed that Amazon was backing a California ballot question that would have repealed a newly enacted state law that would have required online retailers to collect sales taxes on some sales.  They had in fact put up $5 million in the effort.

The deal between California and Amazon goes like this.  Sales tax collection will be put off until September 2012, and in return Amazon will drop the referendum.  There was also an informal agreement to open two distribution warehouses in California, employing up to 10,000 workers.

So, what’s in it for Amazon?  It appears they are playing the delay game.  They are hoping by putting off the sales tax collection date that Congress will act and pass something in their favor.
