Question:  Who is teaming up in a unique way to offer consumers a possible path to auto insurance discounts.  You may be familiar with Progressive’s car plug-in (Snapshot) which studies a driver’s “driving” habits, such as miles driven, the number of times the brake is applied and in what circumstances, etc.

This new, joint program of State Farm and Ford Motor Co. uses “Sync” which is Ford’s “connected-car platform” which will feed driver related data to State Farm, which will then use that data to determine driver insurance rates.

There is no additional hook-up needed in this program, as is necessary for Progressive.  The data will sent directly from Ford to State Farm.

This program comes with an automatic discount of 5%.  For every consumer that agrees to the program they will receive a 5% discount on their auto insurance premiums.  The discounts can be as high as 40% depending on how many miles you drive.  Initially, miles driven will be the determining factor for premium charged.
