China now has close to 600 million (591) internet users.  According to an article by the Associated Press on world.time.com the numbers have increased 10% from June 2012 to June 2013.  These numbers are supplied by the China Internet Network Information Center.

This now means that 44% of the Chinese population is connected to the internet.  The latest growth is attributed in large part to growth in smartphones and tablets.  The number of wireless users is now over 460 million.

According to the article the government actively encourages internet use for business and education but censors material they deem as “vulgar, pornographic or violent.”

Other controls have been placed by the government on internet usage, including tightening on video posts, going so far as to require pre-approval before posting.

The Chinese government is not blocking business sites in any way just those they find morally unacceptable.

The numbers are staggering…591 million users represents less than half of the population.  No wonder so many companies are working so hard to get a foothold in the country.
