Backers of an initiative to bring portability to auto insurance discounts have gained important bi-partisan support.  Days after the California Republican Party endorsed the initiative, former Democratic Senate President pro tempore offered his endorsement and current Democratic State Senator, Juan Vargas endorsed it as well.

The initiative has been backed by Mercury Insurance President who has personally put up $8million to aid in its placement on the ballot.

According to the official website, under current law, a California consumer can receive a discount for having continuous auto insurance, but cannot take this discount to competing insurance carriers.  They claim that when passed, the initiative will create competition among insurance carriers and will ultimately lower prices.

The initiative qualified for the November ballot in January by receiving the necessary 505,000 signatures.
