Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that will allow drivers to text while driving, as long as the device is voice-activated.  The bill will go into effect January 1, 2013.

It is important to note that you must have your equipment turned on before you put the car in drive.  Even if you reach down to turn it on while driving, you could get a ticket.  The key factor is “hands-free.”

There is plenty of new technology that is allowing for this change.  From siri on iOS to blue tooth, the ability to give our devices voice commands is becoming more and more prevalent.

But, allow us to be the voice of caution.  If you don’t have to do something else while driving (a distraction) it is safer if you don’t.
