Apple launched the Mac App store in January of this year and has already reached 100 million downloads.  Its goal was to end buying software in a box (whether they said that publically, or not.)  After all, it isn’t necessary to do that anymore.

The store is available as a free download for Snow Leopard and Lion users.  Users can choose from free and paid programs.  Apple shares 70% of the revenue with developers and keeps 30% for itself.

Apple did not say how many apps were free and how many were paid.

It also reported that mobile apps are moving like gangbusters as well.  To date, over 18 billion have been downloaded since its inception.
